Gate Links with a Password
Password nodes add an authentication step to your rule graph. When a visitor hits a password node, the edge worker stops evaluation and returns a password challenge. Only after the visitor submits the correct password does evaluation continue to the next node.Edge-Native Verification
Password verification happens at Cloudflare’s edge. No round-trip to your origin server — the check is instant.
Drop-In Node
Place a password node anywhere in your rule graph. Gate the entire link, or only specific branches based on conditions.
No Configuration
The password node itself has no settings — the link-level password is used for verification. Just wire it into your graph.
Combine with Rules
Place password nodes after conditions to require authentication only for specific visitor segments.
How It Works
- The edge worker evaluates the rule tree until it reaches a password node
- If the visitor hasn’t verified yet, evaluation stops and a password challenge page is returned
- The visitor enters the password and resubmits the request
- The edge worker validates the password and resumes evaluation from the password node
- If verified, evaluation continues to the next node in the graph
Setting Up Password Protection
1
Create or edit a link
Set the link type to Rules and open the flow editor.
2
Set the link password
In the link settings, enter the password that visitors will need to provide. This is configured at the link level, not on the node itself.
3
Add a password node
Drag a password node onto the canvas and wire it into your rule graph. Place it after the entry node to gate the entire link, or after a condition to gate only specific branches.
4
Connect the next node
Wire the password node’s output to the next node in your graph — a condition, split, transform, or destination.
Use Cases
Private content sharing
Share links to confidential documents or internal resources. Only recipients who know the password can access the destination:Selective gating by audience
Combine with conditions to only require a password for certain visitor segments:Early access links
Gate a product launch link with a password for beta testers, then remove the node when the launch goes public.Next Steps
Countdown Pages
Add a countdown timer before the redirect instead of — or in addition to — a password gate.
Entry Node & Scheduling
Combine password protection with time-based activation windows.
